Summer Book to Art Club

Book covers around the world: The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret ...

As the last bit of our FUTURE TENSE:  IMAGINED WORLDS FROM THE MARGINS programming,  this summer, we will be focusing on Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, an important novel that has spawned many adaptations, art in other mediums, and important discussions about feminism, bodily autonomy,  and dystopian America.  While not exactly a beach or hammock read, Atwood’s work offers fertile ground for creative interpretation and we hope you join us for reading, artmaking, and virtual discussion.

How to Participate:

1. Read the book.  There are many inexpensive physical copies available via online retailers (used & new).  It is also available for download as a free e-book. You can also heck out some of the great cinematic adaptations available, including the most recent, Hulu network’s The Handmaid’s Tale.

2.  In July, we’ll be creating alternative book covers and movie posters for The Handmaid’s Tale, which will be featured in a virtual exhibit in the Fall.   Translate your vision of the story into whatever medium strikes your fancy–collage, paint, photography, printmaking, illustration, & more…

3.  Join us all along in our Book to Art Discussion Board, where we will be hosting virtual discussions of the book’s themes, the adaptations, and its place in the feminist canon, as well as in dystopian literature, and more.  Also, keep an eye on our social media, where we will be collecting resources and other points of interest related to the book and its adaptations.

All Book to Art Club activities are open to the Columbia College Chicago community and the greater public.

We had an amazing time at Zine Fest on Saturday and gave away a whole bunch of resource zines and sold a whole bunch of Chicago Crypto Society publications (our little HOAX week spin-off project.)  Keep an eye out in the Library's Zine Exchange for our extras & unsold materials, as well as some new crpto zines due out this summer...it's also not to late to pickup a free copy of Breton's Birthday, or purchase a copy of DARK FOREST at the circulation desk (our Grimm projects) the proceeds of which go toward future AofR programming!

Tomorrow Night!

Join the Library and the Aesthetics of Research for our Fall 2017 installment of The Book to Art Club featuring our first title Grimm’s Fairy Tales. Started by the Library As Incubator Project, the Book to Art Club is a book + art-making club that exists virtually and in-person at libraries around the world. a way to find hands-on, creative ways to engage with literature – where the process of art-making is more important than the product!

Because we want as many points of entry as possible for our first go, any edition of the Tales of the Brothers Grimm will do (and the varying illustrations are a bonus!) Stop by the library to check out one of our copies, or get one through interlibrary loan (or scope out the versions of the tales available online.) Each session, we will be exploring a variety of art and craft techniques, culminating in a year’s end collaborative limited edition book arts project.

We will have a wide selection of supplies on hand—paint, markers, colored pencils, paper, collage materials, glue, scissors, etc. and will be doing some brief technique demos to get you started, including collage, printmaking, paper puppets, and book sculptures.
